I was listening to this podcast the other day
about how today’s society lives in an industrialized civilization and we use
nature as an escape from all the day to day stresses. It implies this idea of an industrial work
driven mankind Vs another life of constant connection with nature as a form of human
survival.
In other words: necessity Vs choice. I will give
you an example; how many of my readers enjoy fishing? A long week of work is
done, let’s pack up and head to the cabin for some fishing and relaxation. Back in good old day’s fishing was something
that needed to happen in order to survive. If you didn’t catch anything, then
you didn’t eat. So... when did fishing and connecting with nature become
something we just do for fun? When did it stop being imperative to our
survival?
If I were to ask any one of you, readers to define
who you are, how many of you could actually tell me? I’m not asking what you do
for a living, how many kids you have, the amount of different diplomas you may
possess, what type of car you drive etc... I am asking WHO YOU ARE. What do you
value, what are your own individual beliefs, what thoughts do you carry in your
mind that embody everything that you are? Those are three extremely powerful
questions that not one person in this world can answer without the fundamental understanding
of their relationship to the creation of which we live in.
When you’re out camping at the lake, or doing any
basic activity outside in nature is your stress level burning through the roof
or do you feel pretty calm and happy? Most will tell you they feel pretty calm
and happy. You see, nature has a positive impact on our existence. It takes
away our stresses and brings us back to balance. It amplifies our connection
with our self and our environment.
Now that you understand this, let’s dial back to
the beginning here of how today’s people are virtually slaves to an industrial work
driven society. Why is that? It’s quite simple- the further you move away from
your connection to yourself, the more you begin to destroy the environment around
you. You might say to me, well Camila, we’ve made so many historical advances.
We are a growing world filled with new career options, beautiful architecture,
vehicle advancements etc... That’s
great! But how much do those things really matter to you? Are they really that
beneficial to your own well-being?
Material things often create an illusion that we
are happy. We are defined as successful because we have the biggest house on
the block or the newest model of today’s hottest vehicle. Ok, none of those THINGS
help us understand who we are. They are things we hide behind in hopes that one
of these days they will, fill that void of constant circulating negative
energy.
SO... why do we need an escape? Why do we go on
vacations? Why do we spend time outdoors camping, hiking, fishing etc...? We do
this because subconsciously we are seeking the revival to that severed
connection within ourselves.
“The environment is in us, not outside of us. The
trees are our lungs, the rivers our blood stream. We are all interconnected,
and what you do to the environment, ultimately you do to yourself.”
-Ian Somerhalder
I leave you with this- If you truly want to
understand WHO YOU ARE, take the time to connect with yourself and your environment.
Listen to the birds, feel the wind and the sun embracing your skin, see the
different colours all around you. Absorb it, feel it, connect with it. Seeing
the beauty in nature and it’s creations is seeing beauty in yourself.
